Effects of some sesquiterpenes on the stored-product insect Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
García,Matías; Sosa,Marta E.; Donadel,Osvaldo J.; Giordano,Oscar S.; Tonn,Carlos E..
In order to evaluate the allelochemical activity of some sesquiterpenes isolated from the native plant Tessaria absinthioides (Hook. et Arn.) DC, and some semi synthetic derivatives against Tenebrio molitor L. larvae, we have developed bioassays directed to quantify repellency, larval mortality, and its effects on the development. Although costic aldehyde caused the maximum repellent effect, all the compounds showed a significant effect at some dose or time, indicating behavioral avoidance. The topical application of costic aldehyde produced the largest increase on the duration of the pupal stage. Tessaric acid exhibited the highest toxicity by topical application at the experiment closure. Both eremophilane-1(10),2,11(13)-triene-12-oic, and <img...

Effects of statins on the development of sepsis and organ dysfunction in hospitalized older patients in China BJID
Gui,Qifeng; Yang,Yunmei; Zhang,Jiajia.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the protective role of statins on the development of sepsis and infection-related organ dysfunction and mortality in a hospitalized older Chinese population with bacterial infections. In this retrospective cohort study, 257 older patients with bacterial infection were divided into two groups: a statin group, those who had received statin therapy for ≥1 month before admission and continued receiving statin during hospitalization; and a non-statin group, those who had never received statin or used statin for <1 month prior to admission. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk and protective factors for severe sepsis. A significantly lower incidence of organ dysfunction was found in...

Effects of temperature on herpes-like virus detection among hatchery-reared larval Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Renault, Tristan; Gerard, Andre.
This paper describes effects of temperature on herpes-like virus detection in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas larvae held at different temperatures. Intranuclear, intracytoplasmic and extracellular viral particles were observed in velum and mantle connective tissues of oyster larvae reared at 25-26°C. In larvae held at 22-23OC, although nuclear lesions were observed, the presence of viral particles was not detected. Results were obtained for oyster larvae with 4 different parental origins. Herpesvirus infection was found in 3 of the 4 groups of oyster larvae held In the same conditions at the higher temperature.

Daou, Rafik.
Negative effects of high turbidity, frequently seen at Marennes-Oleron bay in winter, on Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum are experimentally studied with two samples during gametogenetic period may september 1987. Thes clams reared at high level of silt (178 mg/l) reduce their growth to about 32% the reproductive effort estimated by gameto-somatic weight index is reduced to 40 %. The high turbid ity is responsible of a twice mortality rate.

Elevated levels of plasma osteoprotegerin are associated with all-cause mortality risk and atherosclerosis in patients with stages 3 to 5 chronic kidney disease BJMBR
Nascimento,M.M.; Hayashi,S.Y.; Riella,M.C.; Lindholm,B..
Osteoprotegerin (OPG) regulates bone mass by inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and activation, and plays a role in vascular calcification. We evaluated the relationship between osteoprotegerin levels and inflammatory markers, atherosclerosis, and mortality in patients with stages 3-5 chronic kidney disease. A total of 145 subjects (median age 61 years, 61% men; 36 patients on hemodialysis, 55 patients on peritoneal dialysis, and 54 patients with stages 3-5 chronic kidney disease) were studied. Clinical characteristics, markers of mineral metabolism (including fibroblast growth factor-23 [FGF-23]) and inflammation (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP] and interleukin-6 [IL-6]), and the intima-media thickness (IMT) in the common carotid arteries...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Claude, Serge.
This report summarizes a list of husbandry experiments conducted between 2004 and 2007 so as to reduce the summer mortalities of the oyster Crassostrea gigas by farming practices. The Japanese technique so‐called “hardening”, based on nursing the young oysters (less than 1 year‐old) in intertidal areas with high air exposure, is tested and adapted. Significant improvements of survival rates (e.g. 60% survival instead of 40% survival rate) have been obtained by transferring the spat only a few month (between march and june‐july) on “high” inter‐tidal farming plots (up to 40% of mean air exposure time). In such conditions, growth is transiently reduced, but a compensatory growth seems to happen when oysters are transferred back on low concessions. Another...

Gil-Agudelo, D.L.; Navas-Camacho, R.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Reyes-Nivia, M.C.; Bejarano, S.; Garzón-Ferreira, J.; Smith, G.W..

Arfaoui,A; Hmimou,R; Ouammi,L; Soulaymani,A; Mokhtari,A; Chafiq,F; Soulaymani-Bencheikh,R.
The present work aims to find the epidemiological profile of snakebites in Morocco through a retrospective study of 1,423 snakebite cases that occurred between 1992 and 2007. Data were obtained from medical charts of envenomation at the Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center of Morocco. Results revealed that 86% of the snakebites had occurred in rural areas and that males were significantly more affected than females at a sex ratio of 23:20. Furthermore, 35% of the bites happened during the summer, with a peak of 215 cases in June (15.1%). We also discovered that 67.3% of the patients were bitten during the day. The age group that comprised the most agriculturally active persons, from 20 to 44 years old, was the most affected by snakebites (551...

Mass mortality outbreaks (90-100%) in both juvenile and adult blue mussels were reported in 2014 along the Pertuis Charentais area of the French Atlantic coast. A series of studies were carried out to learn more about the phenomenon through detecting pathogens, describing environmental conditions and establishing the physiological status of the animals. Bacteria identif ied as belonging to the V. splendidus species were detected in dying mussels and seem able to cause mortality in blue mussels in the laboratory. Unusual environmental conditions (large amounts of fresh water, re-suspension of sediments during a series of storms, and a high renewal rate of specific water masses in Brittany’s Pertuis area) may be partially responsible for sparking the phenomen

Ehrhardt, N.M.; Prenski, L.B..
Long-tail hake, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important species in the Argentinean southern demersal species complex. Significant development of these fisheries since 1987 is indicative of the need to assess the hoki resource and for this purpose knowledge about some of the fundamental population parameters, such as natural mortality rate, is required. Knowledge on the natural mortality rate is an important element for the quantification of the resilience of the stock to fishery exploitatuib. In this study an algorithm for estimating natural mortality of hoki is developed which is based on information on abundance at age obtained from area swept methods and from age composition in the landings. As a result, natural mortality rates for ages 5 to 9 ranged...

OceanDocs
Giussi, A.R..
Long tailed hake Macruronus magellanicus, is a demersal fish, distributed in the SW Atlantic Ocean, in Malvinas Current waters, from 36° and 55°S, mainly between 50m and 200m depth. The species is also distributed in Chilenian waters in the Pacific Ocean, being caught in the Magellan Strait and the Beagle Channel. Age determination was estimated with the sagittae otoliths, in which only one ring is formed during the year. Growth parameters were calculated directly and with back calculated methodology, no differences were observed between the results. Differences in growth sexes were evident from 3 years old. The oldest age observed was 13. Different distributional areas of adults through out the year could suggest a migratory movement in northern waters of...
